Turbine Sand Mill: Zero-Metal Grinding for Colour-Critical Products

Release time:2026-10-26     Visits:11

Some products cannot tolerate metal. A white coating that turns grey, an ink whose shade drifts between batches, a cosmetic paste that fails a heavy-metals test — in each case the problem often traces back to the grinding equipment, not the formulation.

A turbine sand mill addresses this by combining a turbine rotor with a wetted path that can be built entirely from ceramic and polyurethane. This article explains how the design works and where it is worth the cost. The reference machine is the NT-X series ceramic turbine nano grinding mill from Wuxi Xinyang Equipment Technology Co., Ltd., a nano grinding mill manufacturer in Yixing, Wuxi, Jiangsu, China.

Why Turbine Rotors Grind Differently

A turbine rotor is a shaped body with vanes that push material outward toward the chamber wall and draw it back through the centre. Two effects follow.

First, the bead bed stays fully energised. Disc rotors concentrate energy at the disc rim, leaving zones near the shaft where beads move comparatively little. A turbine keeps beads in motion throughout the chamber, so there are no dead corners and more of the media charge is doing useful work at any moment.

Second, particle size distribution narrows. Uniform energy input means fewer particles escape the grinding zone early. For colour-critical products, a tight distribution is worth more than a slightly lower average.

The NT-X uses a dual turbine rotor specifically to guarantee no dead corners and to maximise contact between rotor and beads.

The Static Multi-Gap Separator

The separator is where most nano mills fail, and it is where the NT-X departs most from convention.

Instead of a single slot or screen, the NT-X uses a static multi-gap separation system with ten discharge gaps arranged around a cylindrical separator placed at the centre of the barrel. Key points:

• Large flow area — ten gaps together pass far more product than a single narrow slot, so capacity stays high even at fine clearances.
• Adjustable gaps — precision gaskets between the gaps let the clearance be modulated in 0.05mm steps, so the machine can be set to retain 0.1mm grinding media.
• 360° discharge — the central cylindrical separator discharges in all directions, leaving no dead corners.
• Easy cleaning — removing the front cover exposes the separator, and one person can complete the task. That matters for changeover time between products.

The isolation plate grinding chamber is designed to sustain a high flow rate while retaining media of 0.3mm and above, and the machine is suitable for grinding materials from 1μm down to 50nm.

Full Ceramic and Polyurethane Construction

Every part of the NT-X that touches the product can be supplied in a non-metallic material. The barrel internals can be assembled as fully ceramic parts or as a ceramic and polyurethane combination, depending on the product.

Components available in pure oxide ceramic:

• Ceramic bucket body
• Ceramic front cover plate
• Ceramic sized protective cover
• Ceramic separator
• Ceramic spacer sleeve

Components in polyurethane:

• Polyurethane turbine rotor
• Polyurethane gasket

The result is zero metal contamination, which is what makes the machine suitable for ultrafine nano dispersion of white and solid-colour materials — the products where a trace of iron or chrome is immediately visible.

Xinyang publishes grinding reports for the NT-X on a range of materials, which gives buyers a starting point for their own trials:

• Silicon carbide
• Inkjet inks
• Lithium iron phosphate
• Pesticide suspension agent
• Titanium blue
• Barium titanate
• Glass insulation coating
• Iron aluminium phosphate

Applications

The turbine mill's application list is broad because the zero-contamination requirement is common across several industries:

• Nano ceramic and zirconia
• Lithium battery materials
• Silica sand
• Printing and inkjet ink, camera ink
• Aluminium oxide
• Food
• Variable resistors
• Barium titanate and barium carbonate
• Medicine and catalyst
• Cosmetics
• PZT

If your product appears on that list, and your current mill is producing colour drift or failing metal-content checks, the wetted-material specification is the first thing to review.

PLC Control and Line Integration

The NT-X is supplied with a PLC automation control system that can connect mixers in series to run cyclic grinding. Programmatic control reduces labour cost and, more importantly, makes the process repeatable — the same recipe produces the same result across shifts and operators.

For plants running multiple products, the combination of PLC recipes and a separator that one person can clean in minutes is what makes short changeover times realistic.

Xinyang Equipment Turbine Mills

NT-V series efficient rod type nano sand mill

Wuxi Xinyang Equipment Technology Co., Ltd. manufactures the NT-X series ceramic turbine nano grinding mill alongside its disc, rod pin, dual-power and vertical sand mill ranges. The company's wet grinding equipment reaches 50 nanometres with media down to 0.05mm, and it also builds ball mills, airflow crushers, mixers, double planetary mixers and emulsifiers, so a complete grinding and dispersion train can be sourced from one supplier.

Machines carry a one-year after-sales service period and are designed for at least three years of service life.

Request a Sample Test

Because the value of a ceramic turbine mill depends entirely on how your specific product behaves, the sensible first step is a trial. Send your material, target D50 and D90, viscosity and batch volume to shen@xinyang-mill.com or call +86 18051935350, and ask Xinyang Equipment for a grinding report including particle size distribution and a contamination check.
